The European Commission is in the process of developing a Regulation Framework for AI chat assistants. This initiative draws upon several sound governance practices and principles. These include transparency and accountability in AI algorithms and decision-making, data privacy and protection, ethical considerations during AI development and deployment, bias detection and mitigation. Various business groups have also released their own proposals and recommendations regarding the responsible use of AI.

Transparency has become more and more essential as AI systems are developed and deployed. Many experts are worried that AI algorithms and decision-making processes could result in unintended biases, algorithmic drift, or other undesirable outcomes.

Some AI developers have attempted to address these issues through transparency-enhancing mechanisms like public records laws. Unfortunately, these tools often fall short of providing adequate solutions for accountability concerns related to AI decisions.

What accountability and transparency entails

Algorithmic accountability demands more than transparency – it necessitates concerted effort from “system architects” to explain their models, from computer scientists generally to create models that are understandable and interpretable, as well as from public sector purchasers and regulators demanding these explanations be provided.

Implementing these efforts can be challenging and requires time, money, and effort from AI system designers. In the context of AI, this means creating new governance mechanisms such as ethical standards and independent audit bodies to monitor and review AI system design and operation. Doing so will guarantee consumers have a safeguard in place to protect them from being misled.

What does AI accountability and transparency entail?

a. Explainability

AI systems must be designed so that they provide users and stakeholders with clear explanations of their decisions and actions. This will allow them to better understand the reasoning. Explainability is essential to ensure transparency, as well as to address concerns about bias, discrimination and possible errors or biases within AI models.

b.Fairness and Bias mitigation

AI systems must be built with security and robustness in mind. They should be protected against vulnerabilities, attacks and unauthorized access. Transparency also includes disclosing security measures to ensure the integrity of AI systems, and the data that they handle.

Furthermore, bots should be able to verify users’ identities through biometric data rather than photo identification.

Chatbots must also be mindful of other security challenges when handling user data. These include how to store and manage the information securely, providing adequate privacy protection, as well as avoiding user rights infringement in case of data destruction or unauthorized disclosure.
